Senior Tax Manager
About the Company
Our client is a remote, modern CPA firm that supports growing business owners with tax compliance, proactive tax planning, bookkeeping, accounting operations, reconciliations, month-end close, HR, and back-office advisory support. The firm is built around high-quality delivery, practical guidance, modern systems, and a balanced work model with no traditional tax busy-season hours.
This is an opportunity for a senior tax leader who wants to own the quality and flow of client work, serve as the technical tax authority for the firm, and build scalable processes that make excellent work repeatable across a remote team.
About the Role
The Senior Tax Manager will lead review and operations for the tax and bookkeeping production team. The Client Relationship Manager owns the client relationship; this role owns delivery of the work, including complex return preparation and review, tax research, planning analyses, reconciliations, closes, quality control, SOPs, and team development.
This is a full-time, remote U.S. role for someone who enjoys being the person others bring their hardest tax questions to. The ideal candidate is hands-on with complex returns, confident leading distributed teams, and energized by building the systems and accountability that make great work repeatable.
Responsibilities
Tax Leadership & Review
• Serve as the firm's technical tax authority and final reviewer/sign-off for individual and business returns.
• Prepare complex individual and business returns when needed; this is a hands-on leadership role, not review-only.
• Review California and multistate returns, S-corporations, partnerships, pass-through entities, and other small-business tax work for technical accuracy.
• Review tax calculations, planning analyses, quarterly estimates, pass-through entity tax calculations, and compliance requirements.
• Perform and direct tax research, identify risks and planning opportunities, and coach staff through technical issues.
Bookkeeping & Operations Oversight
• Ensure bookkeeping accuracy, completed reconciliations, and accurate month-end closes.
• Monitor workflow and deadlines; coordinate handoffs between bookkeeping and tax teams so financial data is tax-ready.
• Own the production workflow end-to-end and keep delivery predictable, accurate, and on time.
• Create and maintain SOPs, improve processes, track productivity, quality, utilization, and build accountability systems.
People Leadership & Collaboration
• Lead and develop tax and bookkeeping professionals across U.S. and offshore staff.
• Coach and review team members, participate in performance reviews, and recommend staffing, compensation, and promotion decisions.
• Build a high-trust, high-accountability team and help turn strong staff into effective reviewers.
• Join client meetings as needed to explain technical tax issues, discuss planning strategies, and support the client relationship lead.
