SENIOR ASSOCIATE / OF COUNSEL | JOB DESCRIPTION


THE ROLE

Our client is a litigation law firm seeking a Senior Associate or Of Counsel to join a sophisticated business litigation practice. This role is designed for an experienced litigator who can take ownership of complex commercial matters, manage strategy and execution, and serve as a trusted advisor to clients.

The ideal candidate brings at least eight years of litigation experience, with a clear and substantive background in business litigation. There is no maximum experience level for this search; the priority is depth of relevant litigation experience, strong judgment, and the ability to operate with independence.

This search is focused exclusively on attorneys with business litigation experience. Candidates coming primarily from personal injury, insurance defense, or similar non-business litigation backgrounds will not be aligned with the firm's requirements.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Business Litigation Strategy & Case Leadership

  • Manage complex business litigation matters from early assessment through resolution, including pleadings, discovery, motion practice, settlement, arbitration, mediation, and trial preparation.

  • Develop case strategy, evaluate claims and defenses, assess risk, and recommend practical litigation approaches aligned with client objectives.

  • Draft, review, and refine pleadings, dispositive motions, briefs, discovery materials, mediation statements, and other high-level litigation work product.

  • Take and defend depositions, prepare witnesses, argue motions where appropriate, and support hearings, mediations, arbitrations, and trial proceedings.

Client Advisory & Relationship Management

  • Serve as a senior point of contact for clients on assigned matters, providing clear updates, strategic recommendations, and practical guidance.

  • Translate complex legal issues into business-focused advice that helps clients evaluate risk, cost, timing, and outcomes.

  • Maintain strong client relationships through responsiveness, professionalism, and high-quality work product.

  • Partner with firm leadership to ensure matters are staffed, managed, and advanced efficiently.

Team Leadership & Matter Management

  • Supervise, mentor, and develop junior associates, paralegals, and litigation support team members.

  • Delegate assignments effectively, review work product, and ensure deadlines and quality standards are met.

  • Manage litigation calendars, budgets, discovery plans, court filings, and case workflows.

  • Contribute to firm-wide standards of excellence in written advocacy, client service, and litigation execution.


QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications (Must-Haves)

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing.

  • At least 8 years of litigation experience; there is no maximum experience level.

  • Substantive business litigation experience is required.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex litigation matters with limited supervision.

  • Strong experience with legal research, persuasive writing, pleadings, motion practice, discovery, and case strategy.

  • Experience taking and defending depositions and preparing matters for hearings, mediation, arbitration, or trial.

  • Excellent client communication skills and the judgment to advise business clients on litigation risk and strategy.

  • High attention to detail, strong ownership mentality, and ability to manage multiple active matters and deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Haves)

  • Experience in complex commercial litigation, partnership/shareholder disputes, contract disputes, business torts, or closely related civil business disputes.

  • Trial, arbitration, mediation, or significant hearing experience.

  • Federal and state court experience.

  • Prior mentorship or matter-management experience.

Profile Alignment

  • Candidates must come from a business litigation background.

  • Candidates whose experience is primarily personal injury, insurance defense, or similar non-business litigation work will not be aligned with the role requirements.

Compensation

  • Expected base salary range: $200,000-$300,000, depending on experience, seniority, and overall fit.
